WISC-TV Editorial Board member Tom Bier suggests that the four names under consideration for the new Madison elementary school are so worthy of the honor that there is only one solution: Build four schools instead of one. With the death last Sunday of Percy Julian Jr., we now need five.
For those of us who arrived in Madison in the '60s and '70s, Julian was a giant on the civic scene, a highly respected lawyer, a talented photographer, and a friend to many of the civic leaders of the time. He is widely considered a pioneer in civil rights litigation that emerged from the bitter civil rights struggles of the '50s and '60s. He applied those values and beliefs to all people fighting for civil rights, most famously University of Wisconsin students arrested during anti-war demonstrations on campus, as well as employment discrimination cases.
He represented dozens of people who believed their rights had been violated or their personal freedoms were at risk, winning some landmark victories. And he influenced many other attorneys and law students through his dedication and courage.
Madison is known for many things, including protection of personal rights and freedoms. Percy Julian Jr. played an important role in establishing that tradition. We extend out best wishes to his family and friends.
