One of the most difficult aspects of our current health care crisis is the importance of choices. First of all, we do consider both the number of uninsured Americans and the cost of health in our country to constitute a crisis. And we recognize the answers are terribly complex. We also acknowledge individual behaviors and expectations of the health care system must be part of the solution.
But sometimes government plays a role and sometimes we have to work with government on health issues. The Wisconsin Legislature is grappling with just such issues this week.
The smoking ban should be passed as proposed. Opposition from Senate Democrats is unhealthy for all Wisconsin citizens. Next, mental health care should be covered the same as physical health care. The costs -- all of them -- of not covering mental health care are greater than the cost of insurance parity. Same with autism. Somehow we have to help families struggling with the disease about which we learn more all the time.
These are important issues requiring common sense solutions which, in this case, we expect our elected representatives to provide.
