If anything, U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold's determination to enact bipartisan legislation on some of the most important issues facing Americans today has only deepened in the months since he decided not to pursue a run for president. And with the three most likely candidates left in the race all U.S. senators with whom Feingold has worked closely, it seems clear that he will play an important role over the next four years regardless of who wins.
In his meeting with the WISC-TV Editorial Board, Feingold expressed confident optimism tempered with realism. He's a strong believer in small victories and he sees enough evidence of bipartisanship to give him -- and us -- hope. Health care reform, fixing No Child Left Behind, enacting the line-item veto and passing the Clean Water Restoration Act are worthy and possible bipartisan initiatives. And we agree with the senator that bipartisanship is imperative this year.
We were struck by Feingold's comfort with his role and his message and we very much hope he's successful. It's a message all of America needs to hear and we're pleased it's coming from a senator from Wisconsin.
