INTERSTATE STORM JAM – RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY

02/24/08

When we called for answers to the flawed public safety response to the massive traffic tie-up on the interstate during the Feb. 6 winter storm, we received a surprising amount of criticism for even questioning the efforts of law enforcement and others.

So we are heartened by the Wisconsin National Guard report following its investigation of the matter. The organizational, management and communications errors were serious, but they can be fixed.

But we are especially impressed with the way the investigation was handled and presented. Gov. Jim Doyle wasted no time in assigning the investigation and the National Guard completed it in less than two weeks, and that's good work.

And then last Thursday, responsibility was assigned, agencies were held accountable, and Doyle apologized. This went way beyond blame. This was a serious and appropriate response to the citizens of this state and it was handled with respect. It was an example of how government can really work when it wants to, and while more rare than we'd like, nonetheless worthy of acknowledgement and appreciation when it occurs like it did last week.
