EPA Administrator Johnson to Recognize Georgetown, Ky. as a Preserve America Community and Honor Somerset, Ky. Students with Presidential Award

(Atlanta, Ga. – February 21, 2008) On Friday, February 22, 2008, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Stephen L. Johnson will recognize Georgetown, Ky. as a Preserve America Community.  Preserve America is an Administration initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a greater shared knowledge about the nation’s past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of our communities.

Following the recognition ceremony, Administrator Johnson will also honor the Southwestern High School Conservation Club and Raptor Center from Somerset, Ky., with the President's Highest Volunteer Service Award. The President's Volunteer Service Award was created at the President’s direction by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The Award is available to youth ages 14 and under who have completed 50 or more hours of volunteer service; to individuals 15 and older who have completed 100 or more hours; and to families or groups who have completed 200 or more hours.
